Valérie Bacart is an art historian who specializes in contemporary textile art. She has a background in art administration, having served as the director of the Textile Art Centre for seven years. Bacart also teaches philosophy and psychology of fashion at the EFP in Brussels. She has a wealth of experience in the art world, having directed the Maison des Artistes d'Anderlecht and the Brussels Cultural Centre "Escale du Nord" for ten years. Bacart is an accomplished speaker, and has given talks on various topics including textile arts in modern and contemporary art, female artists in the 20e and 21e centuries, and contemporary art in China. She has also contributed to catalogues for both collective and individual exhibitions. Bacart's professional experience extends to the theatre as well, where she was involved in production for a theatre company and led the "Scène à Deux" project for teenagers in the Brussels region. In 2000, she co-founded the association "Equinoxe" with playwright Emilio Saussez, which aims to promote and integrate various artistic practices. The association currently coordinates an international residency for young artists.
Valérie Bacart raises the question of the categories of art and craft through the use of textiles from the Arts and Crafts movement to the present day. The exhibition is based on key moments in the history of art, from the Bauhaus and the 1920s, to the Lausanne Biennials of the 1960s and 1970s, and contemporary works. It features works by Gunta Stölzl, Annie Albers, Varvara Stepanova, Sonia Delaunay, Anton Pevzner, Jagoda Buic, Elsi Giauque, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Sheila Hickx, Louise Bourgeois, Alighiero & Boetti, Olga De Amaral, Josep Grau Garriga, Annette Messager, Lin Tianmiao and Chiharu Shiota. The spirit of the textile, as Valérie Bacard puts it, is freed from materiality in the course of this story, to come face to face with voids and solids, with the lines of force of architecture.
